Activities such as welding, burning or cutting create hazardous dust and fume that is a health risk for workers. Not only can vision be affected from hazy conditions, but if breathed in, the dust or fume exposure can lead to long-term health problems, including asthma, lung scarring and cancer. 

General ventilation forces clean, fresh air into a work area, which is suitable for many projects within confined spaces with limited or no ventilation. However, general ventilation alone is unsuitable for controlling dust or fume as it only moves the contaminated air around. A local exhaust ventilation system actively reduces exposure to contaminants by capturing the hazard at the source and filtering it to remove harmful particles before expelling clean, safe air

COSHH dictates that employers must prevent or reduce worker exposure to substances that are hazardous to their health by:

• Conducting a risk assessment to decide how to prevent harm to health
• Making sure control measures adopted are used correctly

Welding fume is a complete mixture of metallic oxides, silicates and fluorides. Welding fumes contain harmful particles from the material being welded and the electrode. The health effects include:

• Irritation of throat and lungs
• Parkinson’s disease
• Asthma
• Metal fume fever
• Cancer - Research conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer found that exposure to welding fumes, including mild steel welding, can cause lung cancer.
